Zi Bu Yu is literary sketches written by Yuan Mei, a scholar in Qing Dynasty. It enjoyed great fame during that time. It is involved with a great many anecdotes and ghost stories. Some of these stories were learned from others, others came from the author’s own experiences and still others were adapted from other books. It is obvious that Zi Bu Yu is a collection of stories from abundant sources with rich subjects. After being processed and reinvented, the material not only inherits the merits of its original version but manifests its own artistic charm as well. In this way inheritance and innovation are combined well. In particular the refined material trimming art based on life is impressive. In the author’s reinvention, we can also find out the ideas concerning such ideas as repaying the kindness, loyalty and filial piety as well as right outlook of benefit. The author places greater emphasis on awakening of human nature and liberation of self consciousness with the highlight on individual person, which represents the progressiveness and transcendence of his ideas. In some degree it echoes with Yuan Mei’s natural inspiration theory, which serves as the basis for his works and exerts certain impact on them. In a word, we can further into Yuan Mei’s inner world by exploring the material source of Zi Bu Yu, which also provides us with a means to get a understanding of social life in Qing Dynasty. Therefore it has a rather high value.
