Chinese college students is a special group. With China’s reforming and opening up,especially since China joined the WTO, English language plays a more and moreimportant role in China. Correspondingly, the status of language shows somecharacteristics, Chinese-English mixing phenomenon becoming more and morefrequent among college students.This paper is based on sociolinguistic theory. We do a sample survey on73undergraduates from Shanghai International Studies University and ShanghaiUniversity of Technology, using the experimental and investigation methods of sociallinguistics. By changing language in the experiment, we design two sets ofexperiments which are mixed Chinese-English and pure Chinese to examine collegestudents’ attitude to language. At the same time, we combine questionnaires,interviews and other means of surveys, trying to explore reasons for Chinese-Englishmixing phenomenon, all aspects including social situational factors, psychosocialfactors and pragmatic factors. This paper is divided into eight chapters:Chapter One: Introduction; describing the main survey respondents, research methodsand research value.Chapter Two: literature review; this chapter reviews the previous research in this area,including the previous definition of language code and language code mixing, code-switching research direction and angle, and the study of language attitude at home andabroad.Chapter Three: the type description of mixed words; this chapter mainly describes thebasic types of mixed characteristics, through the views of form, semantics andrhetoric.Chapter Four: changing-language investigation and analysis; this chapter throughoperation of experiments and statistical analysis after the experiment, draw basicconclusions: Shanghai college students generally agreed that students who use mixedlanguage are "more charisma, more confidence". With further classification analysis,we come to conclusion that the gender, grade and school influence the attitude andusage of Chinese-English mixing language while year of school of little relevance.Chapter Five: social situational factors survey and analysis of results; this chapterthrough the questionnaire surveys, try to find respective correlation between Chinese-English mixing and social situations, communication topics, communication objects.Chapter Six: social and psychological reasons; by analyzing the corpus, and relateditems in the questionnaire, this chapter gets the point that divergent novelty, hopingthe recognition of self-identity and the great influence of English and English-speaking countries all impact Chinese-English mixing.Chapter Seven: Pragmatic analysis; from the perspective of discourse, it is kind ofcommunication strategy to use Chinese-English mixing, positively meeting theeconomic principles of communicative discourse and also can maintain "face" and soon. Chapter Eight: Conclusion and shortage of this paper.
