| It is so inevitable that English would fuse with other languages, even with othercultures when it spread throughout the world. China English is the nativization ofEnglish in China, which is different from the deformed and ungrammatical ChineseEnglish. China English takes normative English as the core to express the uniqueChinese things. By the means of Chinese borrowings, translation, literal translationand regeneration entering communication, its Chinese features are easy to find atphonological, lexical, syntactic and discourse levels.Language attitude refers to the evaluation of one person or a group to a languageor a variety, which includes cognitive attitude, affective and behavioral attitude.Language attitude is inevitably influenced by social factors. The current studyattempts to make an analysis of college students’ language attitude to China English.A questionnaire was designed for data collection and was distributed to400college students in South Central University for Nationalities. SPSS17.0was used fordata analysis. The study focuses on three research questions:(1) What is the college students’ overall language attitude to China English?What are their cognitive, affective and behavioral attitudes to China English?(2) What is the relationship among cognitive attitude, affective attitude andbehavioral attitude?(3) What are the positive and negative influencing social factors for languageattitudes?The main findings are as following:(1) Most college students hold a positive language attitude to China English; theirattitudes are influenced by both social and linguistic factors such as major, Englishcompetence and so on. The three aspects of language attitude are interrelated.(2) Cognitive attitude: College students have a basic acceptance of cognitiveattitude but have a lower acceptance to the lexical features of China English. Studentsof English Major who pass TEM4and TEM8show a higher positive cognitiveattitude. Meanwhile the effect of textbook, the medium and teacher avail to positive influence on cognitive attitude. While the place of middle school, family backgroundand the starting time of English learning have less impact. Parents’ occupation and thepass of CET4have negative impact.(3) Affective attitude: English major, English competence, father’s occupation,the effects of textbook and teacher are all positive factors.While students’ pass ofCET4contributes to a low affective attitude.(4) Behavioral attitude: Most college students show a high willingness to learnChina English no matter from cities or from rural areas.(5) Cognitive attitude has a high correlation with affective attitude but has alower relative connection with behavioral attitude. At the same time, affective attitudehas a directly high correlation with behavioral attitude.The study avails to fulfill the academic studies of China English. It can help tospread Chinese culture. |
