Implicit Difference Than The Syntactic Distribution Of Type "a -" And Its Semantic Analysis

‘A一点’is a common and also typical construction in oral Chinese.Based on the previous studies, this paper, by employing theConstructional Grammar, studies the implicit differential comparativefunction of the construction ‘A一点’ to explore the relationshipsbetween the grammatical form and the grammatical meaning, andalso between the syntactic category and the semantic category. To bemore specific, this paper tries to reveal the internal features anddifferences of the‘A一点’construction by focusing on the comparativesemantic rules, forms and conditions necessary for the exchange of thepositions of the construction when it is used as an adverb and acomplement. This paper aims to summarize the semantic andpragmatic characteristics of the ‘A一点’construction and present itsunique discourse functions.This thesis consists of6chapters:Chapter1introduces the significance of the topic and thetheoretical background of the Constructional Grammar, illustrates theresearch methods and the resources of the corpse, and summarizes theresearch approach and the contents.Chapter2is the literature review. This chapter reviews the previousstudies on the topic:(1) The studies of comparative category, includingits typical and non-typical forms;(2) The studies of adjectives, covering‘property’ and ‘state’,‘static’ and ‘dynamic’;(3) The studiesof the A一点construction, elaborating on the constructional meaningand the features of adjectives;(4) The studies of Chinese constructions,introducing the ‘Construction-Chunk’ Hypothesis by Lu Jianming andalso academic achievements of other scholars. Chapter3explores the implicit differential comparativeconstruction ‘A一点’by analyzing the semantic features of ‘A’ andfunctional features of ‘一点’，and then sums up the constructionalmeaning of ‘A一点’from the semantic and functional perspectives,which provides a theoretical framework for the following chapters.Chapter4discusses respectively the predicative function,referential function and descriptive function of ‘A一点’when it is usedas a predicate, subject or object, and attributive. The analysis reveals itssyntactic and semantic identity of the construction when it is distributedin the above mentioned positions.Chapter5focuses on the functions of ‘A一点’when it is used as anadverb or a complement. It respectively elaborates on the syntacticand semantic features of ‘A一点+V’and ‘V+A一点’, and thendiscusses the exchange conditions and semantic differences.Chapter6draws a conclusion of the main theme of the paper andgives implications and recommendations for future research.
