Ecolinguistics is an emerging subject, combining ecology and linguistics. It is the use of ecological theory to look into a language phenomenon through linguistics, surveying the relationship between language and environment and the environmental impact on language disciplines. Catchphrases are dynamic linguistic expressions, widely popular words, terms and phrases in a period of time,and they display the changes made by social, cultural and natural environments. In this thesis, we explore modern Chinese catchphrases, using ecolinguistics point of view. The purpose is to explain the relation between language ecology and natural ecology, as well as the environmental impact on language in precipitation of Catchphrases. This thesis is divided into five parts to discuss the ecolinguistics concept of modern Chinese catchphrases.The first part introduces the formation and development of ecolinguistics and the historical origin of catchphrases and their definitions. It provides a simple explanation of catchphrases from ecolinguistics perspective, followed by the reason to select this topic, the current status of research, the concept, purpose and significance of this subject.The second part discusses the relationship between language and ecological awareness from the following six aspects:linguistic diversity, the relation between language and environment, language ecological system integrity, the language system being a dynamically balanced system, language evolution, and the human influence on language ecology.The third part first outlines the basic characteristics of catchphrases, then looks into the environmental influence on language from configuration characteristics of catchphrases from the following four aspects:Parody, metaphors, abbreviations and figurativeness.The fourth part looks into the ecological perspective reflected by catchphrases, from the classification of catchphrases. First introduces the development of catchphrases, and then discusses catchphrases exhibited by ecological view from social, cultural and natural aspects.The fifth section summarizes, mainly the generation of catchphrases and the constantly expanding propagation route, to show the impact of environment on language, and proposes appropriate standards for catchphrases in favor of constructing harmonious language ecology.
