Thinking About Sculpture And The Body

The topic of this essay is mainly about Body. Since the primitive society, the roles and status of Body have been very important but also quite vague in the field of art, medicine, science and society. The functions of the body in those areas have mutual influence, penetration and also mutual development. Besides, this topic causes my profound interests in analyzing the intricate relationship among the body, art and commerce. In this essay, commercialized Body and sculptors’Body will be my main concentration (Graphic artist’s Body will not be discussed here) besides the parallel discussion about the scientific development served as the indispensable social background.The development of modern physics, particularly the rapid development of the quantum physics and string physics in recent decades, has contributed to our deeper and macro understanding to the essential of materials. However, it also shows that our perception to the universe is getting more macro and we develop a new concept of time and space. Meanwhile, due to the development of modern scientific knowledge, the invention and mastering tools have reached to a high-developed stage, with which we have become unprecedented strong. The scientific cognition has certainly inspired the artists. As artists, we should respond to the new conception of time and space.In terms of philosophy, the classical philosophy, which is the attention of art world, has enough profound influence on the contemporary art and also the art in the classical philosophy context doesn’t correspond with the social status fully. Moreover, the contemporary art itself nourished by the classical philosophy generalizes a lot gaps in terms of interpretation. However, modern philosophy has developed pretty mature and comparatively speaking, it has a closer relationship with the development of modern physics and continuously absorbs supplements for its own development. Under the nourishment of modern philosophy, in the new spatial and temporal context of modern physics, art critic and theory should also be adjusted and development.The sociological defination of a Body has a very wide range. In this artial, I will focuses on illutrating the Body from the aspects of commerce and medicion. From which I have drawn a conclusion that all the surplus value and profits are origionated form commercialized Body and all the consumption are also from the Body itself. The Body unlimited expansing is getting more and more manchinized, rigid, convergized and modelized. Meanwhile, the Body from medical point of view has been influenced by the commercialized Body, treated and repaired as a commercialized product.The perspective of an artist will automatically change in the contexts of new physics and philosophy and the new conception of time and space. Besides, the emergence of string physics has also contributed to the development of the artists’cognition on dimension and space from all aspects. Facing the highly commercialized society, each artist will respond differently. In this essay, part of this essay has been divided to discuss the work created by Erwin Wurn. At the end of it, The Blind Portrait,2008,by Chinese artist, Sui Jinguo is also one of those essential illustrations. By analyzing those artists and also their works, we could see one thing in common---striving to physical return and biological return and return to nature in order to against the commercialized Body and in hope which can help find a new relationship between artist and Body.The Boy from the aspects of commerce and art and also the multiple spatial relationships in society are a whole new world to me and I will continue my study on it.
