Time Conception And National Identity In Tanpinar's The Time Regulation Institute

The Turkish writer Ahmet Hamdi Tanp?nar is one of the most prominent public figures in the 20 th century,and his thoughts on Turkish identity have a direct impact on a number of contemporary Turkish writers.The Time Regulation Institute is the last novel of Tanp?nar during his lifetime.It is also a representative work on the theme of time in Turkish literature.The thesis takes Tanp?nar's The Time Regulation Institute as the research object and starts from the conception of time to study Tanp?nar's national identity.Tanp?nar's thinking about the relationship between time and identity deepened his understanding of national identity.In this novel,he tried to show a fused(terkip),a more personal conception of time through the main character Hayri,to show that national identity can't be completely separated from the past.The introduction part mainly introduces the research status of Ahmet Hamdi Tanp?nar's The Time Regulation Institute at home and abroad.Besides,explains the main research ideas and methods of the thesis.The principal part of the thesis is divided into three parts.The first part introduces the conception of time in Turkey and Tanp?nar's own thinking about time,which is also the starting point of the whole thesis.The conception of time in Turkey has evolved from the traditional conception of time to the modern conception of time.But the modern conception of time in the Western sense cannot really adapt to this land.So,in the end,the conception of time eventually moved towards a fusion of conception of time and a time culture with both eastern and western,traditional and modern characteristics.This section sorts out the views on time in Turkish history and literature.Tanp?nar's conception of time is a fusion conception of time,and many images in his literary creation are closely connected with time.The second part analyzes the difference of Turkish time conception and Tanp?nar's pursuit of national identity in conjunction with The Time Regulation Institute.This part analyzes the different characters in the novel and the conceptionion of time in different periods of Turkey highlighted in the novel,that is,The traditional time conception,modern time conception and fusion time conception.These conceptions of time are respectively associated with pan-ottoman and pan-islamic identity,detraditionalized modern Turkish identity and a Turkish identity which is closely connected with the past.The thesis will analyze the pursuit of national identity through the connection of time,individual and collective memory and history.The third part focuses on the symbolic time images in the novel,and thus explores Tanp?nar's views on the construction of national memory.The outstanding features of Turkish novels are its emphasis on time,diversified image of time and thinking about national identity.This part mainly analyzes the important time images in the novel,such as the bell tower,the bell of fortune,the ruins,etc.,and analyzes the construction of national memory by Tanp?nar in connection with Turkish history.The conclusion is a brief summary of the thesis,further exploring the value of Tanp?nar 's thinking about time and national identity and pointing out the importance of national identity in today's world.
