As written by one of the greatest calligraphers of Tang dynasty Sun guoting, Shupu is a masterpiece which combines the theory and the practice together in the history of Chinese calligraphy. In practical aspect, the examples of this copybook have an excellent pen craft, with various characters’ structures.And its layout design and free style make it had a reputation of the outstanding cursive script work in the early Tang dynasty. In the theoretical aspect, this copybook contains the historical view of calligraphy, the points of techniques, styles; it also includes the ethical and aesthetic outlooks of the writer himself. As a great master of calligraphy, Sun guoting has his unique opinions in the creation and criticism. This thesis mainly analyses the practical part and the theoretical part in the Shupu, comes to a conclusion that these two parts constitute a unity of opposites. |
