In the long history of changing art of painting, from primitive art to modern painting, there are always features of simplification. Simplification in painting shows different styles and characteristics in different periods and in different cultures.This paper is intended to research and analyze the composition, color, and the techniques of the post nineteenth century western paintings, in particular those tend to be between figurative and abstract, and are more distinctive in applying simplification techniques. In searching and interpreting the application of simplification in the language of painting, this paper also presents different means of simplification and related theories.In addition, based on theories of Henry Matisse, Clive Bell, Rudolf Arnheim, and Sir E. H. Gombrich, this paper examines the motivation underneath appeared simplicity, and discusses the significance and influence of simplification techniques in modern painting, in order to deepen the understanding of simplification in painting process.Finally, this paper concludes that painting itself is a process of simplification. Simplification techniques serve an important role in each painting revolution, and great paintings are all results of the ultimate simplification. When facing influences of a variety of painting styles and theories, artists need to apply the principle of simplification, filter out noises and seek clarity in their minds, express true feelings in a more accurate manner, and therefore create a spiritually pure and sincere painting.
