With the acceleration of global economic integration, the cultural exchange among countries has become more frequent and necessary. Novels, as an important form of literature, usually attract great numbers of readers with its unique plots, characters and perspectives. People read novels for joy and instruction, the aim that translators strive to achieve. Though there is great difference between oriental and occidental cultures, which makes completely equivalent translation impossible, it proves in practice that overdone omission and simplification in translation can undermine the information, language features and even style of the original text, which makes the ultimate aim beyond the reach.Based on the English-Chinese translation of Crown Jewel, one of the bestselling novels in U.S.A., this essay, using some applied translation theories as guidelines, tries to present some thoughts from the author on overdone simplification in translation, as well as a new understanding on loyalty and creation in E-C novel translation. This paper consists of three major parts. The first part presents the author’s better understanding of some classic translation theories through the E-C translation process, such as the translation standard of "faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance." The second part, by comparing different translation versions, tries to show that overdone simplification does no good to characterization. It also leads to the missing of meaning, information, language tones, even style of the original. The third part presents the author’s new understanding of loyalty and creation in E-C novel translation, as well as how to work as a qualified translator.
