The monograph Zhongguo Chuantong Yilun Jingdian Quanshi(A Critique of Translation Theories in Chinese Tradition)by Wang Hongyin is a scholarly work which makes a systematic review and critical analysis of the translation theories in Chinese tradition for the purpose of interpreting and transforming them in modern theoretical discourse. After its publication in 2003,it has exerted considerable impact on the development of translation studies in contemporary China and the formation of the current map of translation studies as a discipline in the country. An English translation of the work will not only introduce the research achievement made by a Chinese translation scholar to the English speaking world but also inform the translation communities in other countries of China's long productive history of translation, thus prompting academic exchange between the two sides. Therefore, the present translation project is of academic value and pragmatic significance. The object of translation for the project is the Chinese text of Chapter Three in Volume Two of the new edition of the book, with over ten thousand Chinese characters in total. The author of the work discusses in the text the six criteria for carrying out literary translation criticism, which comprises three sections and an appendix. The text, which belongs to non-literary Chinese text for academic purposes, displays the basic features marking social sciences publications in its theoretical content, language, and textual profile. As far as the translation requirements of texts are concerned, the text requires reproductive translation, though the small number of more literary colored words in it calls for a more creative treatment. On the basis of her analysis of the content and form of the text as well as the translation object and target readership, the translator sets up her basic translation strategy and approach. For the transformation of the Chinese text to the translated text, she applies various translating methods. After completing the translation task, she writes the present translation report. While doing her translation, the translator tries to carry out her basic translationstrategy, that is,to convey as accurately as possible the original conceptual system and academic content, and meanwhile to get as close as possible to the textual profile and the linguistic quality required for academic publication in English. As for her translation approach, she adopts the reproductive approach as the dominant. On the lexical level, the translator makes a list of the terms found in the original text and analyzes their translation. In linguistic operations she applies the syntactic approach. For the rendering of the text, she operates on the level of the sentence as the basic unit and thereby considers the translation of words and development of the entire translated text. After producing the first draft, she takes a series of measures to control the quality of her translation.By her efforts, the translator strives to render her translated version close to the academic publications in the field,in the hope of introducing to the English speaking world the academic achievements reaped by Chinese translation scholars and promoting academic exchange between China and other countries.
