The translation and publication of foreign drama during “CulturalRevolution” were almost banned. The beginning of the new period (1979—) witnessed a new chapter of foreign drama.A large number of foreigndramas had been translated and performed. The theory of foreign drama,the drama trend of thoughts and practice had got a full range of transla-tion, introduction and commentary. Resumed in1979, the journal “For-eign Theatre”(formerly named “Foreign Theater Materials”) had becomean important channel for understanding foreign drama in China. It wasnot only a professional theater publication characterized by theoreticaland informative properties, but also a representation and reflection ofvarious theater publications.“Foreign Theatre” focused on playwriting ofmodern foreign drama, theater theory, performing, directing, scenogra-phy, genres and theoretical works by foreign scholars. It mainly pub-lished the translated works, sometimes also research works on foreigndrama made by Chinese scholars. In addition to the restudy of classicplays by great playwrights such as Shakespeare, Ibsen, Chekhov, ArthurMiller, O’Neill and so on in the journal, translations and introductions ofnew theatre genres and theories of drama were valued too. The scriptsand performances of Euro-American theatre were all introduced, suchas Modernist drama in the early20th century, Absurd Drama of the 1940s, a variety of avant-garde plays, Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty, Gro-towski’s Poor Theatre and the famous British director Peter Brook’sworks. The Asian and Australian plays were also touched upon.:. By andlarge, the researches of foreign drama in1980s were made in a widerange, but mostly limited to surface. Few in-depth studies were in-volved. However, the translation and introduction of foreign dramasmade the influx of a variety of new or relatively new theatrical ideas andforms into China. Chinese drama appeared differently under its influence.One of the most significant trends was the appearance and prevalence ofthe Experimental Drama in80’s. Based on of investigation, this thesiscombs, summarizes and analyzes the related documents and facts, fo-cusing on the impact and contribution of the journal “Foreign Theatre” toChinese theatre in10years after China’s reform and opening up. In thethesis, the author also keeps an eye on the editorial board of this publica-tion and the participants engaged in theatre, analyzes the impact on theChinese theater and dramatists by their work’s, and the relations of dra-ma practices in our country.
