Zhu Xiudu, also named and known as Jiepei, Zilu, Xiao Mu Zi, Fan Hu Bing Yu, Liu WanBing Yu, Xin Yu Bing Ren, Hu Shan Jiu Shi and Hu Shan Chang, is from Xiushui, Zhejiang. Hewas the great-nephew of Zhu Yizun. Zhu Xiudu is a representative poet of Xiushui School, whosemajor existing work is Xiao Mu Zi Shi San Ke, totally in seven volumes.At present, there is no systematic research about Zhu Xiudu in academic circle. Therefore,this paper is to do a research based on the research achievements made by putting Zhu Xiuduunder the backgrounds of Qianlong&Jiaqing period in Qing Dynasty and of then poetry circle. Itaims to evaluate Zhu Xiudu and his poems more comprehensively and objectively in order toproperly recognize his role in poetry history of Qing Dynasty and also to review the achievementsand value of poems in mid-Qing Dynasty from a new aspect.This paper, first of all, makes a textual research on the family history, life, works andinterpersonal relation of Zhu Xiudu, to fully demonstrate his whole life. Having got fully knownto Zhu Xiudu, this paper mainly relates to his poetry creation. Representative poet of XiushuiSchool as he is, his poems present unique characteristics in addition to traditional features of theSchool. His poetry varies in contents, including poems speaking for the public, poems expressinghis own ideas through ancient events, poems created for leisure, and poems composed andinscribed for friends. These poems not only reflect social reality, but also express minds ofliterators. Besides, the styles of Zhu’s poems are much diversified, varying from acerbity ofXiushui School to freshness. He composes poems with talents and literary grace, as well asrhythm, antithesis and word-choosing. His poems are compatible with preciseness and humor,with part of them featured with balladization and colloquial. This paper attempts to present ZhuXiudu’s whole life, interpret his achievements in poetry, and demonstrate that Zhu enjoys aunique status in Xiushui School though he is not enlisted into first-class poets in Qing Dynasty.During the investigation over Zhu Xiudu, it also points out the values and aesthetic features of hispoems, and takes Zhu Xiudu as an example to analyze the comprehensive mental state of allintellectuals in mid-Qing Dynasty and then cultural trend.
