Background:Traditional Chinese Medical work at the primary level is the important front of the development of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which shoulders a dual responsibility of health protection and inheritance and development of TCM. Qualified talents of TCM are the key to the development of TCM service in primary health care institutions. Clinical experience and specialty of veteran practitioners of TCM is the crystallization of TCM theory and clinical practice and the treasure of TCM. They are engaged in medical and health services in the region for a long time and are familiar with environment, residents’ health status and endemic diseases. As a capital city in China, Beijing attaches great importance to academic heritage of veteran practitioners of TCM in primary health care institutions. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to survey the current status of veteran practitioners of TCM in primary health care institutions of Beijing, which will give fresh impetus to talents training and inheritance of TCM.The purpose of this study is to have a good understanding of the current status of veteran practitioners of TCM in primary health care institutions of Beijing, investigate talent-contributing inner factors and summary succession model of their clinical experience.The study was approved by Beijing Municipal Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In this study, by stratified sampling,320veteran practitioners of TCM from81Community Health Services centers and27district and county level hospitals in six district and county of Beijing, who meet the research criteria, answered questionnaires about essential information, talent-contributing inner factors and succession model of their clinical experience.15TCM managers, veteran practitioners and researchers were interviewed. The study is to investigate the current status of veteran practitioners of TCM in primary health care institutions of Beijing so as to give good suggestion to talents training and inheritance of TCM.The main conclusions of this study:1. Personnel conditions aspect, the male proportion of respondents was higher than female (1.37:1).63.75%of their age range from50-60. They, well known in their own fields, have a fairly good educational background with90.00%college degree and88.44%intermediate or above technical post. Outpatient service of TCM is their major work. They are mostly in good health and are able to pass on their clinical experience. A comparatively stable patients’group is formed.2. Talent-contributing inner factors aspect, respondents have boundless love for TCM. They study TCM through family education, succession of teachers or academic education and master the common modern means of inspection. Kinds of TCM appropriate technology services are carried out in primary health care institutions.3. Succession model of their clinical experience aspect, the major models include78succession of TCM teachers,84teaching TCM in hospitals and7grassroots veteran practitioners of TCM heritage studio.4. Working environment aspect, respondents’working environment has been greatly improved. Doctor-nurse relationship is harmonious. However, only14.89%respondents satisfy with their salary and welfare and32.81%of them have the notion to leave their jobs at one time.The main recommendations of this study:1. Strengthen grass-roots Chinese medicine personnel training. Improve the working environment in basic-level medical organizations.2. Explore a training method combining academic education, succession of teachers and continuing education.3.Establish and improve a Multi-level clinical experience succession model of grassroots veteran practitioners of TCM.4. Value the follow-up study on grass-roots veteran practitioners of TCM.
