Prior studies implied that electrical stimulation of NBM (nucleus basalis of Meynert) can facilitate many learning task and cause an increase in cortical cerebral blood flow. In the present study, we aim to clarify whether chronic stimulation of NBM can improve the learning and memory ability2-VO rat and reduce the ischemic impairment in hippocampus. To test this hypothesis, we perform chronic stimulation (30min per day,15days) on2-VO rats and examine the spatial learning and memory in Morris water-maze. And hippocampus slices form these rats are used to evaluate whether chronic stimulation of NBM reduces the apoptosis in CA1region. The result shows that chronic stimulation of NBM significantly improve the escape latency of2-VO rat in Morris water-maze in comparison to the sham stimulation group, and in vitro studies demonstrate that the treatment significantly decrease the neuronal apoptosis in CA1region in hippocampus. The result suggests that the chronic NBM stimulation can improve learning ability of2-VO rat in Morris water-maze and reduce the neuronal apoptosis in hippocampus.
