Objective:The objective is to investigate whether subjective memory complaint (SMC) is associated with objective cognitive impairment, depression, and the syndrome of the Liver qi stagnation in TCM.Methods:102participants with SMC were recruited, together with20demographically matched controls, who had normal cognitive function and without SMC. Participants were asked to rate the degree of their perceived cognitive decline by Subjective Memory Complaint Visual Rating Scale(SMC-VAS). And they were examined objective cognitive function through Mini-Mental State examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA) by trained doctors. Depression was assessed using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HAMD-17), and the syndrome of the Liver qi stagnation in TCM were also investigated.Conclusion:1. According to MoCA scores,102SMC participants were divided into two groups: SMC cognitively normal group of52patients(51%) with average27.2+1.0points of MoCA, and SMC cognitive decline group of50patients(49%) with average21.4+3.4points of MoCA;2、The HAMD-17scores were higher in SMC cognitively normal group than SMC cognitive decline group and the control group(p<0.05, p<0.01)3、The average scores of the Liver qi stagnation syndromes were higher in SMC cognitively normal group than SMC cognitive decline group(p<0.05);4、The scores of SMC-VAS had no significant association with MoCA-score, but were positively correlated with the HAMD-17scores(r=0.394,p<0.01) and the scores of the Liver qi stagnation syndromes(r=0.333,p<0.05) in SMC cognitively normal group. In the SMC cognitive decline group, the scores of SMC-VAS were negative correlation with MoCA-score (r=-0.338,p<0.05), and were positively correlated with the HAMD-17scores (r=0.370,p<0.01) and the scores of the Liver qi stagnation syndromes (r=0.388,p<0.01)Results:A considerable part of the SMC individuals did not have objective cognitive impairment. SMC with or without cognitive impairment is associated with depression and the syndrome of the Liver qi stagnation in TCM.
