Nowadays, virtual prototype technique has been used extensively in the initial design stage to predict the handling performance, determine the final solution. It can shorten the developing time, save money, and improve the competition of the production. A rigid flexible coupled multi-body dynamics model of a large tonnage off-road vehicle is created based on ADAMS/Car, and then it is simulated and analyzed including handling stability and some special working conditions.Firstly, using finite element software Hypermesh and Motionview to operate the grid division and modal analysis of the double wishbone and the frame, generate the ADAMS inputable modal neutral files.Secondly, according to3D model of the large tonnage off-road vehicle and its parameters, the rigid flexible coupled front suspension and gradual stiffness leafspring rear suspension are built. Through suspension simulation on the basis on ADAMS/Car, the results not only verify that the front aligning parameters and the rear stiffness of model can satisfy the design requirement, but also ensure that the coupled entire vehicle model’s simulation can more accurately close to the actual situation.Thirdly, the entire vehicle model is created and modified. It consists of eight subsystems:front/rear suspension system, stabilizer bar system, steering system, body system, front/rear tire systems, braking system and4WD powertrain system. Before simulation, some overall parameters need to adjust. Finally, according to the national standards, six handling stability simulations and three special working condition simulations are carried out, they are steady static circular test, pylon course slalom test, steering step test, steering impulse test, cornering with steer release test, steering portability test, driving through vertical step, pothole and slope test, and then processing these results, evaluating these parameters according to national standard. The results show that this vehicle has a good handling performance and off-road performance.
