In the numerical value of today, the development cycle of new product is getting shorter and shorter, substantially reduce the cost of the product, product extension and expansion of space required a great deal of expansion, which requires extensive use of optimization techniques for product design. Due to the complexity and diversity of product forms, especially in the industrial field, not only the applications of the products have specific requirements, but other performance indicators of the product also required, products to meet the performance requirements in the design stage, the most effective method is computer simulation.The traditional optimization concept is in some of the indicators meet certain requirements under the premise of adjusting the design variables, and optimal for a particular indicator. Every design parameter changes need to be a complete finite element analysis, and according to the optimization algorithm used to analyze the object complexity and optimize the number of variable factors,the optimization process may need dozens or even hundreds of the complete finite element analysis to obtain a possible result. For large-scale analysis model, the practicality of this optimization design is not good.Traditional hydraulic structure design, the general requirements of the designers according to design requirements, reference to a similar structural design, with practical experience and judgment to create the design, actually refers to the structural analysis, the process is roughly:suppose~analysis~check~redesigned. This repeated design method is the tedious process, double-counting of low efficiency, often does not have sufficient manpower and time to revise repeatedly and thus actually received often not the best program. On the other hand, the general design units are unlikely to spend a lot of time and manpower to carry a lot of programs compared, its economic rationality is influenced most by the initial program, and depends largely on the experience of the designer, the final plan is often not the optimal solution. Variational technique provides a more effective solution to such problems through the use of the concept of the "response surface "."Response Surface" finite element analysis results of the approximation functions for the display of the selected input variables, One calculation through the establishment of a high order differential between the input variables and the response to the amount obtained the relationship between the input variables and response variables. this paper will combination Variational technology DesignXplorer VT module grid with the shift editing tools ParaMesh, combination of the upstream slope, downstream slope of the slope ratio of design variables, the dam ssection area as the optimization objectives, expand the variational technique in gravity damoptimize the design of the study.The results show that:variational technology in the hydraulic structure design optimization is feasible, not only high precision, convenient operation, and the computation cost is reduced greatly, in the hydraulic structure design optimization has great potential.
