With the further development of energy-saving and emission reduction as well as the popularization of information, the traditional mannered reading model can’t meet the requirement of smarter planet and smart city construction. Hence it’s especially important for the design of the wireless meter reading system. Zigbee, as a short-range wireless communication technology, is a scheme of equipment networking applications. Which is low-cost, low power, low complexity, and low data rate. It’s a ideal communication solution for the instrumentation measuring indoor. Based on the ZigBee network and the GPRS network, a wireless meter-reading network was built to collect the spot parameter of instrumentations.The design consists of the ZigBee/GPRS gateway and several data acquisitions. A acquisition device is responsible for the collection of data, and upload the data to the gateway device through ZigBee network; while the gateway is responsible for receiving, parsing and forwarding the command of the remote management center through GPRS network, as well as receiving data from the acquisition device through a serial port, which is then stored and forward to the database of remote management center.In this dissertation, the characteristics of ZigBee technology were introduced firstly, the networking process was analyzed, and a solution framework of meter reading system was proposed. The detailed description of each hardware modules, including the gateway device and the acquisition sub-equipment, was presented. acquisition sub-equipment ZigBee module, while the gateway comprises the ZigBee module and GPRS module, two parts were connected with the RS232serial port. Secondly, the system programs were written on the basis of TI Z-Stack protocol stack under the IAR development environment. Which focus on application-layer framework and specific functions. Finally, the system structural configuration was analyzed and a smart network was set up, which realized the operability of wireless meter reading system and the function of ZigBee network including self-organization and self-healing. That the feasibility of the system was validated.
