This thesis is about tentative research on calligraphic theories of He Shaoji, a calligrapher and writer in late Qing Dynasty.Three chapters constitute this thesis. Chapter one starts from He Shaoji’s learning handed from family and association with teachers and friends, as well as Song Poetry’s effect on his ideology, to explore his calligraphic notion, source of calligraphic aesthetic ideology and academic foundation. Chapter two illuminates the inner connection between his calligraphic aesthetic ideology and calligraphic notion, including flavor and "Shu Hua Yi Ti" view, flavor and "Shu Yu Xing Dao Tong", flavor and "Yun Bi" view, which aims to explain that flavor theory is the core of his calligraphic aesthetic ideology and the main line of his whole calligraphic notion. The core and the main line co-exist. Chapter three mainly discusses He Shaoji’s "Jing Gu Xiong Hou" aesthetic ideology in his critics of calligraphic works. This aesthetic ideology is not only his critics on others’works but also his own aesthetic pursuit which are connected with each other.Seen from the inner connection, the flavor theory is the core of his whole his aesthetic ideology. And his "Jing Gu Xiong Hou" ideology is not only extension of his flavor theory but also flavor theory’s macroscopical expression on works’display forms. They are supplement and complement each other.
