At present, students of English majors in China’s universities for nationalities are not good at such basic skills as English listening, speaking, reading and writing, especially at the normalization of English pronunciation and intonation, and at the appropriate perceptivity to grammar structure. In order to explore a doable solution to the problem, the writer makes this research which is also intended to study the direct method’s theoretical and operational hierarchies in practice and therefore provide new data for its basic theory construction and its development in China’s English teaching.This research, through literature analysis method, sorts out the direct method’s theoretical basis, practice principles and its present research situation at home and abroad; after analyzing the status and problems in the integrated English teaching of universities for nationalities, discusses the direct method’s applicability in the integrated English teaching of universities for nationalities, and using the method of case analysis, makes a lesson plan design; through the action research method, does a three-month teaching practice in the class to which I gives lessons in the foreign language department of my university for nationalities; through classroom observation, questionnaire survey and data comparison, it can be known that the direct method has got a notable effect in the integrated English teaching of universities for nationalities:the students’ interest in English becoming higher, the degree of accuracy in pronunciation, intonation and grammar being improved, skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing being obviously reinforced.Through reflection and comparison, it is considered that although there are some limitations and something to be discussed, the direct method in the integrated English teaching of universities for nationalities can fundamentally change the little-effect situation of teachers’spending much time and energy in interpreting texts in the traditional integrated English teaching of universities for nationalities, and can also ensure that students study English pronunciation, semantics and grammar in the unitary language system, and therefore effectively master the English language. |
