A Grammar of the Chinese Language is one linguistics book by the British Protestantmissionary Robert Morrison. This book refer to the all aspects of the Chinese research, at thesame time, it have many examples and can afford practical assistance to the student of Chinese.T his book have important historical value, it is particularly important in grammar and worthy offurther exploration. At present, the systems research for this book is surviving blank. This articlepretends to observe britannica content of A Grammar of the Chinese Language. Through theexhaustive finishing, we want to make comprehensive and fair evaluation.This article is divided into four parts:The first chapter is introduction. It mainly introduces the significance of this article,research status, research method and Robert Morrison’s life and major works. Among them, inthe selected topic significance, it mainly relates to research the cause and the book value; On theresearch status, it mainly analyzes the present price of study achievements and the deficiencies ofA Grammar of the Chinese Language, and it provide us with the research direction that we want;On research projects, it includes the research goal and the research methods. At the same time,through the study of Morrison’s life and his major works, it can help us to conduct acomprehensive system of research.The second chapter is main part, and it mainly observe Robert Morrison’s Chinese conceptfrom A Grammar of the Chinese Language. In this section, according to the written order of theA Grammar of the Chinese Language, first of all, introduce the style of this book and the profileof this book, in addition, separately introduces the book in the "Chinese spelling, grammaticalfeatures, the characteristics of the dialect and metrics. In the "Chinese spelling", it mainlyintroduces the syllables, tones of Chinese characters and the writing content; in grammar, itmainly introduces eight parts of speech, such as nouns, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, adverbs,prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, according to Morrison’s account of the division, we alsotry to make universal search of class division of the characteristics; in the dialect, it mainlyintroduces the difference between Mandarin and dialect, and several characteristics of theGuangzhou dialect; in the rhythm, the content involves "Poetry", five-word poems andseven-word poems, poems, other genre. In this part, on the basis of previous studies, we willmake a comprehensive and meticulous research.The third chapter is the comparative study and evaluation. It contains three parts: part one is the positioning of A Grammar of the Chinese Language in the western missionaries in Chinesestudies; part two is the comparison of the A Grammar of the Chinese Language and the grammarsystem of the Chinese grammar book after Ma Shi Wen Tong;and part three is the meaning andshortcomings of A Grammar of the Chinese Language. We try to make a comprehensive andobjective evaluation.All in all, through the research of A Grammar of the Chinese Language, we want to discussthe chinese concept of this book, especially the grammatical concept. At the same time, we willreveal this book’s value.
