| This is a translation report on the Woman in Black. The source text, at present,has not been officially published in Chinese. The author Susan Hill created manyfiction and non-fiction works, including the Woman in Black, the Mist in the Mirrorand I’m the King of the Castle. Susan was awarded the Somerset Maugham Award in1971, and she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the2012Birthday. The contents translated come from the first Chapter. Afterexperiencing the horrible mysterious case about the haunting ghost, Arthur finallycame back to the normal life, yet he can’t get the peace in his mind throughout. Thedarkness easily aroused the terror in his heart. In order to get relief from the wholematter, he finally decided to record the whole experience and the unpleasant past onpaper. The report contains four parts. Firstly, the introduction part contains thebackground of the translation project, the demand of the translated text, the objective,structure and the significance of the project. Secondly, the study background containsthe theoretical basis, the introduction of the source text and the author, the maincontent, the analysis of the source text and the summary. Thirdly, the difficulties intranslation and the translation methods part will focus on the translation difficulties,the preparation work and the translation methods. The difficulties lie in the translationof the scene description, the proper expression of the inner imbroglio of Arthur andthe dissemination of the mysterious atmosphere. And also, some things in the storyrelate to the cultural elements of the times. The translator has to consider over allthose ingredients and carry out modification many times and refer to literatures so asto finish the whole translation. In the process of the translation, the primary methodsadopted are division of long sentences, conversion as well as addition and reduction.Fourthly, the conclusion contains the translation experience, the lessons from thistranslation project and the problems unsolved. |
