Abstract/Summary:
Thick translation refers to the way of using annotations and glosses to locate the text in a rich context. Within the framework of thick translation, the current study explores the art translation taking the booklet of Three themes in European Art as an example. It is found that this notion of translation applies properly for art transition in facilitating the readers’comprehension through providing background knowledge of art. However, there is no denying that the over-use of thick translation may also induce some disadvantages, such as multiplying readers’processing effort and rendering TT unfaithful to the original. Hence, a good control of thick translation within a proper degree would be beneficial for translation practice and studies.
