Five Dynasties was a period of frequent wars. Many scholars lived in mountain forests toavoid wars. Thus, there were a number of great landscape painters in the mountain forests,such as Jing Hao, Guan Tong, Li Cheng and Fan Kuan. As a model of the northern hermitpainter, Jing Hao secluded mountains and observed the changes of real mountains and water.Based on practices and explorations, Jing Hao aptly demonstrated the geomorphologicalfeatures of the nature in the north by the form of ink paintings, which was a majorbreakthrough. Therefore, in the late Five Dynasties and the early Song Dynasty, with so manyimitators it even developed into a dominant national customs, which was later known asLandscape Painting of the North School. This paper attempts to study the artistic style ofLandscape Painting of the North School from the perspective of its representatives, paintingsand ideas.This paper focuses on the Artistic Style Features of the North School in the Period of theFive Dynasties and Early Song Dynasty. Firstly, it discusses the research status, methods andsignificance. Then, it discusses the overview of the Landscape Painting of the North School,explaining the development of landscape painting before the Five Dynasties, clarifying thecauses of the faction between the south school and North School and analyzing the works andrepresentatives of the Landscape Painting of the North School in the Period of the FiveDynasties and Early Song Dynasty. Next, it deeply studies the Artistic Style Features on theLandscape Painting of the North School in the Period of the Five Dynasties and Early SongDynasty, which is the focus of this paper. The viewpoint of this part focuses on the works,artistic ideas and life activities of the North School, finding out the Artistic Style of theLandscape Painting of the North School, and thus analyzing its diversity and commonality.This part analyzes the diversity of the North School from the unique creativeness, objectivesocial factors and a variety of aesthetic analysis; the commonality from the panoramic view ofthe composition, energetic and vigorous pen and ink and the personification of the mood.Finally, this paper discusses the impact of the Landscape Painting of the North School, mainlydiscussing the impact on the Landscape Painting in Yuan Dynasty, the Ming and QingDynasties and Japanese paintings. By the study of works, artistic ideas and life activities ofthe North School, we can deeply understand the landscape art in that time. It also provides some valuable ideas and methods of research on the landscape paintings.
