English is widely used as the world language, the research and achievements of its teaching material are very outstanding. There are many excellent English textbooks which successful experience is worthy of learning and reference by us. As the elementary Textbooks of the second language teaching, New Concept English and Boya Chinese well reflect the requirements of language teaching in the aspects of structure, content and auxiliary resources. The article has chosen the English model textbook New Concept English (Frist Things Frist) and Chinese textbook Boya Chinese (Elementary Start) as the objects of study, I hope to be able to compile more high-level Chinese textbooks through the compare between the them.Besides the preface and conclusion, this paper has three parts.First, in the structure of the textbooks, the two textbook well reflect their own writing ideas, meet the needs of learners, they have much in common. But Boya Chinese is mainly same in each course about its contents, the New Concept English designs a unit form of single and double lessons combined, together with explaining and exercising. This design is more novel and unique than Boya Chinese. At the same time, it does not set up specialized parts of phonetic and grammar explain, it put them into the natural classroom teaching process, which is worthy of attempting in our own textbook.Second, in the textbook contents:in grammar, the two textbooks are moderate in controlling the number of the grammar points, and they all reflects the principles that put the difficult grammar points scattered and recurring. But in the explanation of grammar, Boya Chinese can not be separated from repeating the rules of grammar, and the New Concept English put the grammar and language use together, achieve the communicative purpose in context. This way should be learned by our Chinese textbook.and also the future developing direction of Chinese textbooks compiling. In the texts, the two textbook are more reasonable in the selection of theme and arrangement of genre types, which meet the learners’needs. But in the aspect of interest in the text, Boya Chinese still have a big gap with New Concept English. In the words of the form, the New Concept English does well in reproducing vocabulary, which is worth learning by our Chinese textbook. In practice, Boya Chinese is lack of training exercises in listening and speaking ability,in order to cultivate learners’ communicative ability,Chinese textbooks should make full use of English teaching experience, in order to make improvements to write textbooks in the future.Thirdly, in the auxiliary resource materials, in the illustration,New Concept English’s illustration is more expressive and humorous, and has a high correlation with the text content,it makes a greater attraction to the learner. The color of illustration in Boya Chinese is relatively single, and lack of attraction, some illustrations do not have correlation with text content. In the supporting information, New Concept English has rich supporting information, but Boya Chinese only has a CD and a handbook for teachers, the lack of auxiliary materials is inconvenience for students to self-study and review after class or review brought inconvenience.By comparing in the three aspects,I found the problem in Chinese textbooks and the aspect which we can learn from the English textbooks:promote the interest of the text; promote the attraction of the whole textbook; focused on developing the supporting information; try new forms of Chinese language teaching materials;starting from the needs of the students, pay attention to listening and speaking skills training; all the language material should come from our life.
