This report is based on the translation practice of The Harmonious Essence in Confucianism, a paper presented on The Second Nishan Forum on World Civilizations, which performs as a platform to promote Chinese culture and the exchanges among different civilizations. The paper is written by Tan Keesang, a Malaysian scholar in Confucianism. Based upon Chinese classics such as The Analects and I Ching, it discusses the harmonious essence that Confucianism has. Thus, numerous culture-loaded expressions and classical Chinese are involved in it. This report is intended to explore the strategies the author applied in the translation of culture-loaded expressions in the source text. There are four chapters in this report. In the first chapter, background information of the task is introduced. The second chapter describes the whole process of the task including the screening of translators, division of task, and so on. Then, the source text is analyzed in detail with the focus on culture-loaded expressions. In the fourth chapter which is the main part of this report, the author illustrates the translation of culture-loaded expressions from the perspective of Skopos theory with a large number of examples from the source text. Various translation strategies are used. At last, the author summarizes the whole report in the conclusion part and gives some advice on how to cope with the translation of culture-loaded expressions.
