Researches On The Kings’ Appellations In Ancient Chinese

Chinese appellation culture is an important part of Chinese culture. Researches about Chinese appllations has achieved fruitful results since the ancient times, but it still exists some problems, such as putting more emphasis on the research of kinship terms while the social appellations’study is insufficient, corhort study is very weak; lack of systemic and exhaustive research. So, a systemic and thorough research of Chinese social appellations in a certain historical period based on original data appears necessary.As one of the important contents of Chinese appellations research, researches on the kings’appellations in ancient times not only has academic value, but also has important practical significance. This paper is intended to conduct an all-round systemic research of kings’appellation case from the diachronic and the synchronic dimensions, based on thirteen ancient literature (including " Shi Jing","Shang Shu","Yi Jing","Chun Qiu","Zuo Zhuan","Zhou Li","Yi Li","Li Ji","Lun Yu","Meng Zi","Lao Zi","Shang Ju Shu","Shi Ji"), so as to make up for the insuffienct of the research in this area.This paper is mainly divided into four chapters.The first chapter is a general overview of the research on this topic, including a summary about Chinese appellations research, the meaning and the method of the research, a definition of the corpus.The second chapter is a summary of all the kings’appellation cases in the corpus, and also conducts a brief analysis from etymology angle. It contains two parts:the kings’appellation in descriptive phrases and the kings’appellation in communication language.The third chapter analyses the evolution and distribution of kings’appellation from the dimensions of time and region based on the second chapter. Although the analysis of this part is derived from a large number of ancient texts, thinking about the still insufficient corpus and various technical limitations, the paper can only provide some data distribution about the time evolution and the geographical distribution of kings’appellation, and make some example analysis of some word which owns more prominent characteristics, so as to offer some support for the further research.Adhering to the "theory guides practice" principle, the fourth chapter elaborates the usage of kings’appellation in the TV series "Han Wu Da Di" and points out a few errors according to the precious research (mainly the usage of kings’appellation in "Shi Ji").
