The Economist, an English magazine, has a history of over160years, enjoying high popularity in the international political and economical fields. This thesis focuses on79articles published on the Column Britain in the third quarter of The Economist.After classifying and analyzing the culture-loaded words appeared in the magazine, we find that most of them are:those words concerning politics and economy, and concerning law and education. And there are also some culture-loaded words about religion and history, etc. Furthermore, most of the cultural words concerning politics and economy, words about law and words concerning religion and history have no related or close equivalent and bear different associative meanings in another culture.We’ve done a research on how to translate them; meanwhile, we’ve classified and analyzed some kinds of translation strategies. We found that most of the cultural words concerning politics and economy, words about law and words concerning religion and history can be translated in an annotated way. And a small part of words concerning politics and economy can be explained, whereas the words about education are literally translated.It is certain that there are many strategies for the translation of cultural words, such as transformation and free translation, etc. The thesis mainly discusses three kinds of translation strategies——annotation, explanation and literal translation. We are anticipating that our elaboration is of certain practical value for the translation of cultural words.
