The paper studies the theme of the relations between aristocratic mothers and their sons inZuoZhuan. Because of the core position of father-and-son ethics in ancient China, mother-sonrelationship is inferior to father-son relationship.In fact, the relations between mothers and sonsare also important. There are a lot of descriptions of mother-son relationships in ZuoZhuan, andthe majority is nobility. This paper will focus on the research of them. Basing on the previousresearchers, by means of summarizing types and preliminary analysis, try my best to explain theessence of mother-son relationship in the Spring and Autumn Period.There are three parts of this paper, including introduction, main body and conclusion.The introduction mainly clarifies the research purpose, research summary and researchmethod.ChapterⅠ views of mothers and sons’ get along in the Spring and Autumn Period, andexplains their respective roles. Mothers in ancient China were responsible for the conceiving andbegetting offspring, and sometimes shared responsibility with their husbands for the forming ofsons’ moral value and personality. In return, sons would care for their mothers, together with theestablished filial piety, so the responsibility of sons was providing support and burial.ChapterⅡ sums up the harmonious and inharmonious relations between mothers and sons,lists typical example. That’s because not all the mothers and their sons’ actions are comply withstandards of behavior. There are both ideal type and opposite model. The task of this chapter isexplaining the real situation between mothers and sons get along in the Spring and AutumnPeriod.ChapterⅢ explores the constitute factors of the mother-son relationships, including familybond, politics, economics, culture. The reason why relations between mothers and their sonsharmonious or not is various. In the Spring and Autumn Period, compared with the individualfactor, the social factor is playing a bigger role.The conclusion comes in the last part which summarizes the essence of mother-sonrelationship, and reveals the practical significance of this study.
