Shashi Deshpande (1938-) is a famous contemporary novelist in India. Hernovels be concerned by fascinating plots and simple styles in India and the West.There is little grand narration in her novels, but she rather focus on real livingconditions of Indian. Her description of daily life in India, more truly reflects theinterlacing of tradition and modernity, history and reality in contemporary Indiasociety. Especially for her description and analysis of the character which show herprofound humanity solicitude.The first chapter, although living in modern society, the male characters inDeshpande’s novels, are still influenced by traditional values. First of all, theycontinue to believe that reality is "Maya" and an illusion, not worth pursuing. At thesame time, they have the concept of sacred liberation. Through analyzing theirtraditional demands, the writer shows their mental suffering which is caused by theconflict between tradition and modern times, and reflects on the relationship betweentraditional religious beliefs and the human nature.The second chapter, the female characters are as the contrast of male charactersin the novels. From the examination of the tradition of India, Deshpande reflects thefate of Indian woman. Men pursue of traditional values which brought great pain tothe lives of women. To the suffering, women are no resentment, but quietly accepted.They face the reality, and make efforts to achieve self values in real life. Theyconstantly reflect on themselves and change themselves. This performs the firmnessof Indian woman. From the reality of India, the writer is exploring the female way ofthe future.The third chapter, different surviving state and spiritual pursuits between menand women, exhibits the writer’s insight and reflection about the complex reality. Hersubtle description of Indian lives and psychology, reflect her human caring. Thepursuit of freedom should not be divorced from reality in order to build harmonioushuman relations. She not only describes the cruel reality, but also lits a light of hopefor the future.
