The Problem Play in May Fourth Period has been created under the inspiration and influence form the Ibsen’s problem play. However,as the medium of George Bernard Shaw and Hu Shi’s Ibsenism,they have a direct influence on it. The thesis takes the Ibsenism as a point,presents the The Problem Play in May Fourth Period on a whole.and discusses its contributions and limitations.In the process, the thesis tries to look across the article in a historical perspective, and discusses how the Problem Play in May Fourth Period created and developed under the influence of the confused theory.The introduction is divided into tow parts. The first part differentiates and analyses the concept of the Ibsenism;the second part summarizes the relevant works and research articles.The first chapter starts with the theoretical source:George Bernard Shaw’s Ibsenism. The first part discusses how the Bernard Shaw understood the Ibsen’s play. Although his point of the discuss skill is reasonable but there is also a maze. Because of the simple understanding about the discuss problems, George Bernard Shaw’s Ibsenism is a kind of subjective judgement.The second part has discussed and analysed the western drama theory’s evaluation aboutthe aesthetic value of Ibsen’s play,which is based on Ibsen’s creative practice.and contrasted with the theoretical criticism focused on the social value.The second chapter is about the theoretical guidance of the Problem Play in May Fourth Period:Hu Shi’s Ibsenism. The first part analyses the maze of Hu Shi’s Tbsenism form the external formation to the internal essence. The theory emphasized the problem and the realism principle,and the reason is the particular background times and the sense of social responsibility of the intelligentsia in May Fourth Period.The second part has discussed and analysed the Chinese drama theory’s evaluation about the artistic value of the Problem Play in May Fourth Period,which is contrasted with the mainstream theoretical criticism form the social and political angles.The third chapter has analysed and summarized the influence on the creation of the Problem Play in May Fourth Period from the internal of the text. The first part summarizes the creation mode:Nora’s escape,which is combined with the concrete work. On this basis,the article discusses the lack of the artistic and aesthetic value. From a specific case the second part makes the Ibsen’s 《a doll’s house》 as reference,and discusses Hu shi’s 《once in a lifetime》.The article has confirmed the historical significance and the social and political values of the problem play,and discussed the lack of the artistic value,especially the lack of characterization.The epilogue has two parts. The first part discusses the problem play’s inheritance in the contemporary China. The second part is the practical significance of the historical reflection on the problem play in May Fourth Period.
