View from the Chinese-western cultural exchanges history, the missionary had appeared in early. However, when investigating its image, we can see that the missionary identity is inconsistent between that in the world history of colonial of last five hundred years and researches in academic circles inland now. Only in Chinese research output of missionary identity, in1980s as the dividing line, its research conclusions are opposite before and after, too. Before the1980s,the brand image of the Missionary are "colonial pioneer"; after that massage, however, the overall results of the missionary in the academic world are, missionaries opened the modernization of China’s various undertakings.This article is to the British missionary David Livingstone of19th century as the breakthrough point, translating and combing the missionary notes of his all life in Africa, then putting it in the concrete historical context. Through the study, we see that the missionary identity of David Livingstone is just a symbol. Once he goes abroad,his behavior does not necessarily have an inevitable connection with a missionary. On the contrary, he consciously serve themselves represented by the interest groups.
