Wen Xin Diao Long is the first general and systemic work in the literarytheoretic history of Chinese ancientry. The theory system of Wen Xin Diao Long isvery wide and profound, which exerts a far-reaching influence upon the developmentof chinese literary theory.“Qing” is a very important conception and category in Wen Xin Diao Long.Comparing with other concept used by Liu Xie in the whole book, in the term ofquantity,“qing” appears for more than one hundred times. The frequence of thisconception is considered as a rarity in Wen Xin Diao Long. From the angle of theoreysystem of Wen Xin Diao Long, the description about “qing” rans through the wholework. However, in the field of academia, the practice is only localized to somedispersive discussion about “qing” in each part of Wen Xin Diao Long. This text triesto conduct a deep and systemic study on Liu Xie’s Wen Xin Diao Long, and toexpress the role and meaning of “qing” in the whole literary theory.The text is divided into three parts:The first chapter focuses on the evolvement of “qing” from the Pre-ch’in toWei jin period, which works as a foundation for discussion about Liu Xie’s “qing”.There are two sections in Chapter one. The first section introduces the process ofevolvement of “qing”, during which the ideaistic origin of “qing” can be discovered.The second chapter analyzes that Liu Xie absorbed some valuable “qing” theoriesfrom Confucianism, Tiao theory and Qu Sao theory. And at last, Liu Xie formed the“qing” theory with his own vivid features in the age of Wei Jin—a historical periodwhen the “qing” is often emphasized.The second chapter discusses the features of Liu Xie’s “qing” theory. The firstsection of this chapter expounds ontology of Liu Xie’s “qing” theory.“Qing” isestablished on the basis of the concept of nature. This is the speciality of Liu Xie’s“qing” theory. It is also the first time that “qing” was discussed on the basis ofphilosophy in the literary theoretic history of Chinese ancientry. Therefore,“qing” plays an essential role in Liu Xie’s literay theory. At the same time,“qing” is veryimport in Liu Xie’s literary idea and “changement” of literary. The second section ofthis chapter discusses the meaning of “qing”.The third chapter treats the role and influence of “qing” in literary activity.Firstly, Liu Xie thinks that the creation of literary work is the interaction between“qing” and “wu”. Secondly,“qing” is associated with the gestation of artistic images.In the period of work creation,the role and influence of “qing” is mainly revealed bythe relationships between “qing” and “wu”,“qing” and diction. Finally, Liu thinksthat “qing” plays a very import role in the process of literary receiving.
