Adaptation is often used as a technique in Li Yu’s drama writing, which occupies animportant component in his lifetime of drama writing career. Adaptation is a kind of artcreation, based on the original material and combined with the character of the age andpersonal aesthetic experience; it’s not simply the “new wine in old bottles” like others.The drama adapted by Li Yu often pay attention to popularization and the stage effect,which helps to win many more audience. Although these adaptations are questionable insome aspects, they still worth learning for the followers. This paper chooses “ShenZhong Lou” and takes Li Yu’s adaptations as the main research subject, which can bedivided into the following parts:Firstly, it introduces the classification of the Li Yu’s adaptation works, studies andconcludes the different adaptation strategies which used in the works of different subjectsource, in order to make sure the art value of his drama adaptations.Secondly, it uses the text of “Shen Zhong Lou” as the theme to analyze its selectionand innovation of “Liu Yi Zhuan” and “Zhang Sheng Zhu Hai” in the aspects of the plot,the stage performance and the language, which makes us to understand how Li Yucombines the two old dramas into a new one and turns a decadence into a magic.Thirdly, the thesis combines with the theory of drama adaptation in “Xian Qing OuJi”,and bases on this starting point, referring to the relevant works at the same time, toanalyze the drama adaptation of Li Yu, and further to give a conclusion of his dramaadaptation on three dimensions of text requirement, stage requirement and innovationrequirement.Finally, the paper gives an analysis of the causes about Li Yu’s drama adaptationform the internal and external perspectives, according to the background of times and hispersonal experiences; then it describes the significance of his adaptations for thecommunication of novels and dramas, and the influence of his practice for the latergenerations on drama adaptation.
