Wang Tao is a transitional figure in the course of modernization of China. He playedan important role in the transformation of ideology of Chinese culture,and even theideology of the whole society. At the same time,he epitomizes the arduous explorationand complicated state of mind of early do-gooders. Wang Tao was the earliest and mostsuccessful journalist in the end of the Qing dynasty in China"s history, and he was alsothe advocator and thinker in the movement of political reform at that time. Since the1930s, there are researches on this aspect in the academic circle both in China and abroad.However, being a novelist, Wang and his novels have been ignored by many critics.Researches on his novels concerning marriage and love are rare,especially Hidden Takesthe Two Battles. Therefore, this thesis takes this as a research subject.There are four parts in this thesis. The first part serves as an introduction of theauthor and the versions and content of Hidden Takes the Two Battles. Introduction ofWang Tao’s life mainly emphasizes his communication with some novelists and novelcritics. The second part combs through the romantic stories, including love story betweenhumans and romantic love between humans and flower demon or fox spirit. The thirdpart is Wang Tao’s exploration of ideal marriage, including new view of love, newconception about marriage and construction of ideal marriage. Part four discusses WangTao’s mental world and outer world which affects his literary creation, at the same time,reveals his complicated state of mind in the process of literary creation.
