The present paper applies stylistic analysis into scientific translation. It aimsto explore the strategies and methods in English-Chinese and Chinese-Englishscientific translation based on stylistic analysis and guide the translation practice.It is argued that in order to delivering information accurately and efficiently,proper stylistic devices should be employed in scientific translation to help thecorrect transmission of the information and improve the translation quality. Sincescientific writings belong to special register, they inevitably have unique linguisticform and stylistic features, which include accuracy and norm, conciseness andclarity, objectivity and formality, strict in logic, etc. In translating, the informationin the original must be thoroughly understood, meanwhile, the translated text mustconform to the norm of scientific style. The combination of stylistic analysis andfunctional translation theories will help to achieve both faithfulness in meaningand appropriateness in style, which will improve the quality and readability of theversion, thus achieve the function of the target text.The present paper first makes a brief review on major foreign and domesticscholars’ research on scientific translation, on the definition and connotation ofstylistics and style, on principle scholars’ research of scientific translation fromstylistic perspective and on functional translation theories; Then it analyses thefeatures of scientific English on lexical level, syntactic level, discourse level andfrom stylistic angle, and makes an analysis on the feasibility and significance ofstudying scientific translation from stylistic perspective. Combining with theabove analysis, the author makes some exploration on the strategies and methodsin E-C and C-E scientific translation based on functional translation theories. Atlast, the paper summarizes the key points on how to improve the quality of scientific translation. A good translator should not only have bilingual competenceand knowledge in the special field, but also possess subjective dynamics. What’smore important, stylistic analysis is necessary for selection of proper translationmethods.
