The birth of the undergraduate translation major is the need of the new era. Thedevelopment of the independent and complete translation discipline offers plenty ofopportunities to the development of reform and globalization to accelerate theinternational interaction. Since the Ministry of Education of the People s Republic ofChina approved to establish the undergraduate translation major in2006, until now thereare42universities establishing the undergraduate translation major. Curriculum design,which plays a key role in the process of teaching, formulates the direction of personneltraining, reflects the structure of teaching, and embodies the progress of studying. As aburgeoning discipline, the undergraduate translation major should set up a scientificcurriculum system firstly.The thesis compares the characteristics of undergraduate translation major inmainland China with the characteristics of Hong Kong from the point of curriculumdesign so as to obtain some implications for the construction of the translation major inmainland China which is just in its infancy. The data of the curriculum design forundergraduate translation major of19universities in mainland China and7universitiesin Hong Kong is analyzed by the literature analysis, content analysis, and comparativestudy. The author draws a conclusion as: mainland focuses on bilingual personnel withtranslation ability, while Hong Kong targets at professional translators with bilingualability.According to the discussion on the aim of curriculum design and course structure oftranslation major, the thesis concludes that the educational objective should be made inaccordance with the curriculum design to reflects universities characteristics, and designthe curriculum from the point of training high quality translators with both theoreticaland practical basis, Chinese and English linguistic basis, translation and language ability.
