Proper nouns are a unique kind of nouns which always refer to single, uniquesubjects, and it is relative to the common nouns. In any language, there are a lot ofproper nouns, and many scholars has been always being interesting in the translationof proper nouns. So how can we translate the proper nouns between differentlanguage systems accurately and freely? What factors affect the translation of propernouns? What are the criteria for the translation of proper nouns? In differenttranslation ways, how to choose and select the most appropriate way of translation?With the advent of more and more problems, it is necessary to do some systematicstudy on proper nouns. In recent years, the research on the translation of proper nounshas become a very important area in translation.That how can translate foreign proper nouns accurately has always been a majorproblem in the translation practice. Despite there are many principles and criteria forthe translation of foreign proper nouns in China, there still exist many problems in thisarea: it is not thorough enough to use those existing principles; different principlesconflict in translation practice. In other words, these principles cannot solve all thedifferent situations in the translation.Therefore, on the basis of a lot of relevant materials, this article reviews thehistory of the Chinese translation of foreign proper nouns, and selects somerepresentative people names and place names as subjects which are in newspapers,television programs, Internet and other mass media nowadays and sums up some theproblems of Chinese translation on foreign proper nouns today, does some analysis ofthe reasons leading to these confusions, discusses the standardization on Chinesetranslation of proper nouns based on the comprehensive consideration of the language,culture and other aspects and tries to make some suggestions on translation principles.
