Study On The Narrative Of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Novel

Nathaniel Hawthorne，who was the pioneer of romanticism in the history ofAmerican literature in the nineteenth century, was the ancestor of the Americanpsychological analysis novel. He played an important role in the history of Americanliterature, and also made important contributions to the development of the Americanliterature. Hawthorne called his works "psychological romance", and he put forwardthat the writer should show the true meanings of their works in their creation. Thispaper is based on the narrative theory, mainly from the angle of narrative focalization,narrative structure and narrative space, to explore people’s spiritual world and moralfield, so that people’s soul can be baptized between the real and virtual world.First, in the aspect of narrative aggregation, the patterns of Hawthorne’s worksare various, such as zero focalization narrative, internal focalization narrative and thecombination of the two modes and so on. However, zero focalization narrative plays alead role. In this paper, I will mainly takes two representative modes to state, zerofocalization narrative mixed with multiple internal focalization narrative, and fixedinternal focalization intertwined with zero focalization narrative. The former mainlytakes zero focalization narrative, with multiple internal focalization narrativeinterspersed among it. Although the latter mainly takes fixed internal focalization,supplemented by zero focalization, readers are still feeling themselves in the positionof the omnipotent when they are reading, which is actually a strategy of the author toexplain his thinking about humanity.Second, in the aspect of narrative structure, this paper mainly use variousstructures of bible U-shaped structure,“arabesque” type structure, and necklace typestructure. This paper mainly analysis the first two structures to perform the author’sethical orientation. The bible U-shaped structure hiddens strong religious implication,which is people born with guilty, only confession to sin; while “arabesque” typestructure presents a history of meaningless, displaying a nihilistic outlook on life.Finally, in the aspect of narrative space, the patterns of Hawthorne’s works arecolorful, mysterious and horrific geological space, complex psychological space,orgiastic and shadowy historical and cultural space, reality and fantasy intertwined spiritual space and so on. This paper is to show the author’s theme about the manyfaces of human nature and the struggle between good and evil in this double space,mysterious and horrific geological space, and complex psychological space.
