The thesis attempts to interpret The Waves in light of Genette's narrative theory, taking three perspectives—narrative focalization, narrative time and narrative structure as the access to view Woolf's elaborate narrative arrangement. In The Waves, Woolf alternately employed fixed, variable and multiple internal focalization. Besides, double narrative time frames were constructed, i.e. the external time frame formed by chronological order and the internal one supported by the leading"moments of being"technique. Moreover, a cooperatively two-layer narrative structure—the external excursive structure and the internal organic one, was integrated. With the elaborate analysis, the uniqueness, creativeness and flexibility of Woolf's narrative techniques are fully revealed. Without doubt The Waves is the climax of her distinct narrative. Virginia Woolf, achieves the modernist transformation of the novel's narrative art in a unique way.
