Listening plays an important part in daily communication, which is one of thefour basic language abilities---listening, reading, speaking and writing. However, listening has long been regarded as a passive process. Because of students’ poorquality and teachers’ lack of research on teaching, the teaching of listening is evenmore unsatisfactory in many higher vocational colleges, which often conducted in theform of explaining new words, playing tapes and checking answers with students.Listeners are only viewed as passive receivers without any necessary hints. Thisteaching approach seems so much like testing listening rather than teaching listeningwhich is far from developing students’ listening competence. Most students’ listeningcompetence is at a low level. The experiment is based on Input Hypothesis, The Affective Filter Hypothesis,Schema Theory and the close relationship between reading and listening, is toinvestigate whether pre-reading the scripts of listening materials has influence on theimprovement of listening competence of the students. Fifty freshmen majoring inHotel and Financial Management from Qingdao Hotel Management College, arechosen as the subjects in this thesis. The thesis includes questionnaire, pre-test,post-test and the post-interview. Through the analysis of SPSS software results, thisstudy is designed to test three hypotheses and the results are confirmed.(1) Pre-reading scripts can relieve students’ nervousness.(2) Students who preview scripts can grasp listening materials better than thosewho do not.(3) Compared with traditional teaching method, pre-reading scripts beforelistening can better enhance students’ English listening competence. The author has made many efforts for this thesis. The findings discussed throughout the investigation are drawn together to highlight some implications forEnglish listening comprehension teaching. Because of the small sample, the shortperiod of time and the author’s limited training in SPSS, the analysis of thequestionnaire and the comparison of two tests may affect the experiment more or less.In further study, pre-reading the scripts of the listening materials teaching modelshould be attempted in other majors and grades of the students in more universitiesand colleges.
