In the English Curriculum Standards for Regular High School(2017)(Hereinafter refer to as curriculum standards),the concepts of subject core competencies,namely language ability,cultural consciousness,thinking quality and learning capability,are specified.Instructional advice on how to enhance students’ listening ability is also provided.This essay,focusing on the listening part,analyses the consistency between textbooks and curriculum standards by using the compulsory modules of BNUP edition as examples.By combining the external and internal analysis,this research finds out that:(1)The listening part is divided into three sections throughout the unit,namely the warm-up section,lesson 2 section and communication workshop section.The cultivation of listening ability follows a spiral style,enabling students to develop their abilities gradually.(2)The content of the listening materials covers the thematic context of human and self,human and society and human and nature.The compulsory modules focus on the human and society and use mainly conversations and interviews records.This helps learners to understand the characteristics of different discourses and connotation of the theme context.However,due to the lack of discourse type diversity,teachers may add some materials such as news report,documentaries,comments and etc.(3)The cultural elements of the material mainly represent target-language cultures.As native cultural elements take up only limited parts,teachers are suggested to present more native culture-related materials and guide learners to make comparisons between cultures in order to cultivate learner’s cultural awareness.(4)The design of the listening activities can reveal the requirements of the curriculum standards including getting main ideas and specific details.However,there are limited activities intended to cultivate learner’s ability of understanding the intention and emotion of the speakers.In practice,teachers may provide inferential and critical questions for learners to develop their thinking quality.The results ofexternal analysis show that after finishing the compulsory modules,learner are able to reach the academic quality level one required by the curriculum standards.
