Translation Of Singapore2010Culture And Education Programme And A Report On The Translation Practice

In preparation for holding grand international sports events, China is expected to not only explore by itself new ways,but also learn from other countries. Undoubtedly, translating foreign sports documents is an effective way to borrow new ideas.With the market for pragmatic translation enlarged, proper translation theories are also necessary to guide translation activities. In1970s, German functionalist translation theories were established, shifting the traditional source-text-oriented studies to target-text-oriented ones. These theories have been frequently applied to translations of many literary and non-literary texts. However, the application of them to sports text translation is rather rare. This report is based on the author’s experience of translating Singapore2010Culture and Education Programme, a profile formulated during the first Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Singapore. The target text is expected to serve as a reference for Nanjing to prepare for the second summer YOGWith the functionalist translation theories as a benchmark and the author’s translation practice as a starting point, the author explains the strategies adopted in word processing and translation of long sentences, as well as other methods such as conversion of passive voice into active one and the proper use of punctuation marks in this report. Then the author summarizes her experience and gives suggestions on-the combination of translation theories-with practices. It is feoped that this report may give some enlightenment to those who translate such kind of profiles and documents.
