Purposes:To explore the mental health of the left-behind children; To research the way to copewith left-behind children, their personality and self-efficacy, mutual relationships andthe effects on the psychological health, hoping to provide the theoretical basis andsupport for the development of left-behind mental health education. Methods:By means of stratified sampling survey of the current group, choose among the middleschool students from17cities in AnHui Province. A total of1050questionnaires (theeffective questionnaire was832) are distributed for anonymous survey. Survey toolsinclude:(1) the self-made questionnaire about the general information;(2) the mentalhealth diagnostic tests (MHT);(3) YiSenKe personality questionnaire---children’sedition (EPQ-C);(4) the general self-efficacy scale (GSES);(5) the questionnaire of theway to cope (CPQ). Apply SPSS16.0software to do descriptive, T test, the single factoranalysis of variance, related analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis.Results:1. The detection rate on psychological problems of left-behind children accounts for5.3%, with mature ways to cope; Part of left-behind children personality development isnot stable, and their low self-efficacy accounts for71.8%;2. The left-behind children’s MHT total score is higher than that of non-left-behindchildren, with the difference statistically significant (P <0.01). Allergic tendency andimpulse tendency factor points are higher than the non left-behind children, with thedifference statistically significant (P <0.05). Self-efficacy score is lower, with thedifference statistically significant (P <0.05);3. In gender differences, the girls among left-behind children mental health test scorehigher than that of male students, with the difference statistically significant (P <0.05).But boys are higher in spirit quality than girls with difference statistically meaningful (P<0.01). In terms of the differences in various birth places, the left-behind children inthe urban areas score higher than those in the rural areas, with the difference statisticallysignificant(P <0.01). When it comes to whether he or she is the only child, the rational factors to cope with the left-behind children score higher than the other side with thedifference statistically significant (P <0.05). So do the score in spirit quality with thedifference statistically significant (P <0.01). About differences in different ages, fantasy factors, the problem-solving factors and neurotic factors to cope withleft-behind children score differently with statistic meaning(P <0.01). After comparison,12-13age group score higher than14-15age group in fantasy factors. Inproblem-solving factors,16-17age group scores higher than12-13、14-15age group. While in the neurotic dimension scores,16-17age group scores higher than12-13agegroup.4. The total MHT score of left-behind children is connected with GSES, the problemsolving, and internally and externally negative trend. Also it is linked to the positivetrend in self-blame, fantasy, retreat, spiritual quality and neurotic quality. The GSES ofleft-behind children is related to the positive trend of the internal and external andproblem-solving but to the negative trend of psychoticism and neuroticism. Among thecoping styles, self-blame, fantasy, retreat, and rationalization are related to the positiveside of psychoticism and neuroticism in personality but the negative side of self-blame,retreat and the internal and external. Problems-solving and psychoticism andneuroticism indicate negative feature. So are seeking assistance and the internal andexternal.5. The multiple stepwise regression analysis of mental health effects shows thatsignificant variable regression equation in turn is neuroticism and GSES, guilt andspiritual quality. Jointly predicting left-behind children the psychological health is37.9%, the standardized regression equation is MHT=0.435by neurotic-0.185byGSES+0.172by0.081by mental quality.Conclusion:1. The ways to deal with the personality characteristics, and self-efficacy are closelyrelated, and all is the important factor of left-behind children mental health. Highself-efficacy, positive coping styles and the outgoing personality characteristics are theinternal positive factors to keep mentally healthy.2.The mental health prevention and intervention of the left-behind children tend tofocus on immature ways, neurotic high scores and low self-efficacy of left-behindchildren.
