Film, as an indispensable part of cultural industry, plays an important role in Chinese people’s spiritual lives. As more and more foreign films are introduced into China, especially English films, related scholars show increasing interest in English Film Translation. Film title, as the essence of a film itself, is a critical component and contributes much to the commercial effect of a film. Hence, film title translation is vital for the potential success of film.This thesis will discuss the translation principle and translation strategy under the reception aesthetic theory. After concluding the theory itself, the author also introduces four features and characters in film title translation, in hope to enhance the understanding and function of film title and better integrate with the theory, and therefore serve the audience in the most impressive way.Under the guidance of above theories and principle, the author will conclude film title aesthetic features as well as the translation methods transliteration, literal translation, liberal translation and recreation by lots abundant examples. What’s more, this thesis also comprises the features and diversity of the film title translation in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. To take audience into consideration, the author suggests the feature and diversity will be needed to preserve in the English film translation, in order to serve the people better in different areas.Through the analysis and proving in the thesis, reception aesthetic is an effective way in the practice of film title translation. By using this theory, cultural diversity is not only served in difference areas, and also served for a better translated version. The author finally uses the reception aesthetic theory, which is considered an audience-oriented theory, to provide good principles of translated version.
