The Characteristics And Translation Of Machinery English

With the deep-going globalization and China’s reform and opening up, foreign exchange of machinery industry is increasing and machinery document translation today is unprecedently prosperous. Because machinery English is extensively covered, highly specialized, strongly rational and logical, translators need fully comprehend the original text by combining professional knowledge with the actual situation during the translation. Additionally, according to the grammatical structure, translators are supposed to completely, precisely and idiomatically convey the original content and information by combining idiomatic expression with machinery stylistic features.By studying a large number of examples, it shows that machinery English is characterized by many technical terms, one word with mutiple meanings, many derivative words, many compound words and many abbreviated words. A review of recent research on machinery English shows that studies about characteristics of the machinery vocabulary and translation are not so perfect. Especially on determining the meanings of words, previous studies are far from enough or lack an effective method. This thesis suggests using electronic tools in order to quickly determine the meanings of words. In addition, for the syntactical use of long sentences and passive voice of machinery English, this thesis explains that tranlating long sentences with abstracted sentence trunks and turning the passive sentences into the active sentences can be taken as a good solution.
