A Study On The Variants In Hanyu Da Zi Dian

Hanyu Da Zi Dian, abbreviated as Handa, is the largest-scaled dictionary with most Chinese characters and comprehensive paraphrases, contains over60,000characters. The two versions were published in1990and2010. The variants in Handa were labeled as "the same as X","the corruption of X","later as X" etc. The second version published in2010made some revisions, and some variants were involved.We established an Access database to collect all the variants in Handa, as well as the changes in the second version, and all these information were used and analyzed in this dissertation. The main researches are as follows:1. Study on the terms. The terms used are much more than Handa declared in the Guide. In this chapter, we divided the49terms into4types, and did some detailed induction and analysis.2. Study on the Related Character. The first part of this chapter is about the display form of Related Character, not only in single character, but also involved Bracket, Slight-pause Mark and Polysyllabic word. The second part is on the Mutual Marking between the Related Character and the Main Character.3. Revision. Though the second version made a lot of improvements, there are still some paraphrases and pronunciation problems as we found, and some of them are quite complicated.Based on above research, we got the conclusions below:1. In terminology using, there are problems such as use different terms for the same function, multiple character relationships in one term etc. And strong points are indicate detailed variant types, use terms base on facts.2. There are merits and drawbacks on the display form of Related Character and Mutual Marking. But they were used casually, and further discussions are required in the actual operation.3. Most revisions and changes done in the second version are correct. But there are revisions without new support, even wrong changes. In the fourth chapter, we did some revisions on our own, but not much, so there are still spaces for further research.
