As one of the most famous writers in china, Yu Hua catches people’s eyesextraordinarily with his everlasting and outstanding creative talent. The pioneeringspirits and exploring attitudes in his works which bring him the deservedreputations are become the bone of contention among the readers and critics athome and aboard. Most readers are concerned with an appalling world and thecomplex character destiny describing in the novel, but the critics would like to paytheir attention to the theme characteristic, themes, words and expression, narrativestrategy or the style shifting in his postproduction and so on. It is undoubted thatthe reading experiences the works give to the readers in reading process arepeculiar both in contents and forms. From his pioneering works such as A Kind ofReality, Blooding Plum Blossom and In1986created in the mid-1980s to hiswriting brush shifting novels such as The Yelling in the Drizzle, I Have No OwnName, Living or Chronicle of a Blood Merchant then to The Brother that becomesfamous almost ten years after its publication, his writings get really nice receptions. Now, there is an immense collection of research reviews in Yu Hua’s works.Associated with the unique literature concepts, the world in his novels seemsto keep a distance with reality, or at least keep the real world at arm’s length. Thestories in his works once focus on extremely antipathetic and cruel themes, such asviolence, horrifying, death and sex. Through these stories, readers can roughly infer the author’s understanding to the world. And these understandings areinterpreted into different literary themes such as time elapsing, death, existing orhuman relations in various criticisms. The thematic diversification in Yu Hua’sworks becomes one of the potential standards for the critics to assess. Meanwhile,it also reflects the richness in work contents, and complexity or deepness in workthemes.Based on the non-systematic research status about Yu Hua’s novel themesamong the critics, in this thesis an overall summary and analysis in novel themeswill be done through the perspectives of high-leveled philosophy and ethic. In myopinion, the entire writing subjects of his works can be accounted and summarizedin three levels, namely life philosophy, existential philosophy and ethics. Thereinto, life philosophy refers to author’s rethinking about lives, death and the relationshipbetween them. Existential philosophy is about author’s narration in suffering andhis cognition about being and nothingness. And ethics philosophy pays moreattention to his observation and estimating in human nature. The themes about lifeand death, being and nothingness, good and evil which are interwoven, and runthrough the works in his life, are used to reflect the contemporary writer’s criticalperspectives in the world and his continuing self-observation about humanity andvalues in his life.
