Abstract/Summary:
"Look" is a common action by people. There are numerous expressions of this action in both English and Chinese.Concerning expressions of "look", there are both similarities and differences between English and Chinese. Verb is important and difficult in second language teaching and learning. This thesis compares the expressions of "look" in Chinese and English, so that teachers can predict the mistakes students may make during the study and take actions to prevent negative transfer. The contrast of semantics can facilitate the study of vocabulary. What’s more, the difference of thinking can be seen through comparing their lexical morphology:Western thinking pays more attention to logic, while Chinese thinking treasures image. Then, the contrast of pragmatics from the aspect of context helps nurture the ability of using Chinese properly. Therefore, the application of contrastive analysis is advisable in Chinese teaching as a second language. These practices will facilitate the students to maximally reduce negative transfer from native language and cultures and ultimately improve students’ability in Chinese.
